Vampires are usually not known for their levity and practical jokes. But actor Ian Somerhalder, who plays brooding bad-boy vampire Damon on The CW's Vampire Diaries, tried to lighten the mood on set by playing a nude practical joke on costar (and real-life main squeeze) Nina Dobrev while filming the season 3 premiere (which aired Thursday night).
As Somerhalder tells Entertainment Weekly, the Vampire Diaries scene involved a naked soaped-up Damon surprising Nina. "Well, you know, you open up the cover page of season 3, episode 1, and it's, like, the first half a page, Damon's already naked," the 32-year-old actor says, setting the scene. "So I'd spent almost two days on set completely naked, which is kinda awesome, because as if I wasn't close enough to our crew members, I feel really close after that."
An atmosphere of mischief prevailed and Somerhalder says that at one point a plot began to percolate on how they could shock Dobrev, 22, when it was her turn to film with the nude Damon. "So our first AD Rudy, at like 8 o'clock in the morning, came up to me and says, 'Hey listen, I have an idea.' When Rudy has an idea, it's usually pretty good," says Somerhalder.
"The first thing (in the scene) we see is Nina's reaction, so what if I was completely naked and we had elephant ears and double-stick tape, and I put them on each of my thighs, and ultimately, she would be staring at a very small, young elephant." (Well, that's a new euphemism for male genitalia!)
So the props department did just that. And, although creating elephant ears for X-rated purposes was perhaps not in the prop masters' original job description, Somerhalder insists it was all worth it in the end.
"The reaction that we got was f***ing amazing," he laughs, recalling the expression on the unsuspecting Dobrev's face. "I hope and pray that that is what we used in the edit because it was such a natural 'Ohmygod!' reaction."
Some actors will do anything to get a truthful performance!
